8K - Joshinji Temple - Tokyo - 浄真寺 (九品仏)

Birthplace of one of Tokyo’s oldest trees (it’s more than 700 years old), the Joshinji Temple or Jōshin-Ji was first established in 1678 in Kuhonbutsu, just a few meters away from Kuhonbutsu Station. Home to the three Buddha Halls which are just in front of the main hall, house three of the nine Amida (Amitabha) Buddha. Each of these tall statues shows a different hand position, also known as Mudra, which has a symbolic meaning in the esoteric Buddhism. These Buddha Statues are the craftwork of the great master Kaseki Shonin (1617-1694) who devoted many years of his life, from ages 18 to 51, to create nine different manifestations of the Amida Buddha. Today’s video is unique in its own way since it was shot using a 42-year-old lens, known as the SMC Super Takumar from Pentax, a 50mm F1.4 lens that even at today’s standard can be extremely sharp yet retaining many of the imperfections of the lenses built during the 60s and 70s. What is also interesting here is the lens' unique structure where one of its internal elements is coated with a radioactive material known as thorium, giving it its unique look and color. This SMC Super Takumar lens is a 24x36mm film lens and compatible with Full Frame sensors on modem cameras and totally compatible with them via a simple and dead cheap mount adapter. If you are interested in this lens, have a look on eBay, where I bought mine, and you can get an amazingly well preserved one for around 100 to 150 USD. Note: This video was shot during the Japanese state of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We took all the necessary precautions required when getting out and visiting this place at 6 a.m. in the morning. However, as you will see, the place was relatively crowded (I made an effort to shoot as few people as possible), with many of them not wearing masks potentially infecting others or face the risk of being infected.
